There are many contenders to claim the title of “planet’s most significant innovation.” The circular axle. The printing press. The steam engine.
As per a new book, though, that honor should go to a mechanised sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, building a modest merchant vessel required around 10 sawyers working for 90 days,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be produced within a week.”
Owing to their speedy mechanical cutter, that turned logs to planks using almost no human effort, Dutch builders were able to build ships faster compared to anyone else, which sparked a century of Netherlands naval, economic as well as artistic dominance in the continent and the world.
The Original True Industrial Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s initial authentic industrial apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. A single part transformed its rotary motion to vertical motion to power the cutting blade. Another component changed that same spinning movement into a sideway’s movement feeding the timber to the cutter. A geared mechanism shifted the wood ahead a measured step per stroke.
“Each element seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts so they operated within a precisely synchronized order, sawing on every downward stroke and moving on every upward stroke. This constituted a remarkably clever application of basic parts.”
